Remarkable as all of the Burtynsky photos are (and it's been fascinating reading about him, his history, aesthetics and the way he creates his images and prints), I think this collaboration makes his work more powerful. Those appear to be skeletons in the Baku oil fields. Are they? If so, seeing them with the planes in the Boneyard has a doubly resonant impact.
Curtis, the uncanny resemblance of those disused shards of oil field equipment to the skeletal remains of some sort of prehistoric creatures gives that photo an acute shudder. In that double-take the central metaphor of the whole series on "fossil fuel" leaps out at us for a moment.
Boneyards indeed.
