As used here, this is intended as an expression of surprise and praise. It all depends on your tone of voice.

Do you know where these photographs were taken?

  2. Curtis,

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they were taken at... Hidden Villa.

But of course it's so difficult any more to locate the authentic Heimat, in amidst all the confusing electronic confetti.

Wet here now, our rot is showing (collapsing stairs), but -- Progress be not proud, your time may yet be coming.

And about the tone issue -- yes, same here. Though in the middle of the night there tends to be a certain, shall we say, tone warp, when the winds are up and the big trees are swaying uncertainly upon their saturated roots.

Not to speak of the shrunken old people.

    — My thoughts exactly.

    When the roots are exposed,
    the trees are barefoot
    without their earthen shoes

  4. The tumbledown shifts in sound are lovely to my ears.

  5. "tumbledown", "exposed", "bark" -- all these bits fit.
