What is the value of a stone? / Erich Fried: Ertrag

.
Relatives of Uygar Coskun, who was killed the previous day in a twin blast in Ankara, mourn over his coffin during a funeral ceremony in Ankara, Turkey, 12 October 2015. Mourners anxiously began to gather to commemorate the 95 people killed in twin blasts the previous day at a pro-Kurdish peace rally, the worst attack in Turkey's modern history. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which came three weeks before snap general elections set for 01 November and the G20 heads-of-government summit later next month, raising security concerns.

earn and bear

to collect hope
out of solvable problems
out of possibilities
out of everything
which promises something

to reserve
the powers
for that
which really
should be done

that way grows
quiet
the stock
of unspent
despair

Ertrag

Hoffnung sammeln
aus lösbaren Problemen
aus Möglichkeiten
aus allem
was etwas verspricht

Die Kräfte
sparen
für das
was wirklich
zu tun ist

So wächst
im stillen
der Vorrat
an unverbrauchter
Verzweiflung

Palestinian protestors take cover during clashes with Israeli security forces near the Jewish settlement of Beit El, just north of the West Bank city of Ramallah, on October 12, 2015. Palestinian foreign minister Riad al-Malki accused Israel of seeking to spark "a third intifada", as violence again flared in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shot dead a 13-year-old boy during clashes south of al-Bireh in Ramallah district, medics said. The child, identified as 13-year-old Ahmad Sharaka, was shot in the neck with a live round, medics said. He was rushed to the Palestinian Medical Complex in Ramallah where doctors operated on him, before he succumbed to his wounds. Sharaka's death brings the total number of Palestinians killed to 24 since the beginning of October. He is also the third 13-year-old to be shot dead by Israeli forces in the same time period. Another Palestinian was shot in his leg with a live round during the protest in the al-Balu area of southern Bireh, while another was injured by a rubber-coated steel bullet. Two others reportedly suffered excessive tear gas inhalation at the protest. Israeli bulldozers have reportedly removed large objects in the area, in order to remove cover for Palestinian protesters. An Israeli army spokeswoman had no immediate comment. In clashes across the occupied Palestinian territory, the Palestinian Red Crescent counted at least 55 Palestinians shot and injured with live fire, and 77 injured by rubber-coated steel bullets.

  2. Tom, I wonder if you saw these comments by the U.N. high Commissioner for Human Rights:

"One wonders what has happened to Europe. Why is there so much amnesia? Why don’t they properly distill from their experience that they’ve been down this road before and it’s a very unhappy road if you continue to follow it.”

  3. the unending eviceration-- the thrashing organ grinders of people-- witnesses all in these blown open doors--

"Despite the discrepancy (an ocean courage age)
this is also true: if I have any taste
it is only because I have interested myself
in what was slain in the sun

    I pose you your question:

shall you uncover honey / where maggots are?

    I hunt among stones"

  4. And still one wonders: what crawls out from under those overturned stones, at the end of that wasted road?
