Tundra Swans (Cygnus columbianus), Oregon. True to its name, the Tundra Swan breeds in the high tundra across the top of North America. It winters in large flocks across both coasts, and is frequently encountered during its migration across the continent, This pair, with snow-clad Steens Mountain in the backdrop, was photographed near the small town of French Glen in southeast Oregon in April 2007.: photo by Dan Dzurisin, 15 April 2007

Robinson Jeffers: Love the Wild Swan

“I hate my verses, every line, every word.
Oh pale and brittle pencils ever to try
One grass-blade’s curve, or the throat of one bird
That clings to twig, ruffled against white sky.
Oh cracked and twilight mirrors ever to catch
One color, one glinting flash, of the splendor of things.
Unlucky hunter, Oh bullets of wax,
The lion beauty, the wild-swan wings, the storm of the wings.”
-- This wild swan of a world is no hunter’s game.
Better bullets than yours would miss the white breast,
Better mirrors than yours would crack in the flame.
Does it matter whether you hate your...self? At least
Love your eyes that can see, your mind that can
Hear the music, the thunder of the wings. Love the wild swan.

Robinson Jeffers: Love the Wild Swan, 1933, from Solstice (1935)

Fire and Tundra Swans | by USFWS Pacific

Fire and Tundra Swans (Cygnus columbianus), Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon. Prescribed fire is used at the refuge to maintain ecological processes, specifically: thinning and opening up emergent marsh vegetation, removing decadent material in sagebrush steppe uplands, stimulating herbaceous production, maintaining herbaceous diversity, and improving wildlife habitat and foraging. Prior to this burn, vegetation was very thick and was not being used to  optimal level by wildlife. By next year, this area will offer prime habitat for upland birds and waterfowl on the edges of the wetlands adjacent to the marsh.: photo by Carla Burnside, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Pacific Region, 27 February 2014

W2246-0526: What they saw when they they took down the cameras

Artist's impression of the galaxy W2246-0526

It started to rain
again. The house grew quiet.
The sound of cars splashing
past in the rain was the only sound.
When they took down the cameras
at the Refuge
they learned the truth, too late
for it to be to be of much use --
the galaxy is on the boil
and blowing itself apart
-- and everything was too intense
and too bright
already, even then,
when the universe was young.

  1. "the galaxy is on the boil
    and blowing itself apart"

I like the symmetry of the astrophysics I dimly recall that characterized the rubber-banding of the universe. That it only stretches so far, but never so far as to snap; always to retreat back, presumably faster than its advance, with all due cataclysmic retreat. They (the ones with the equations and equipment) disagree on that last part in particular, but it makes more sense, and is in, I think, with how I see every photo on this post.

Been too long since I've commented. I've been wordless.

  2. as the tundra swans
inspired by the tilt of the earth
    get ready to leave
    for the exact northern marshes
    where they were born.

  3. "I hate my verses, every line, every word"---who hasn't been there? Thanks, Tom, for another look inside the universe. Meanwhile, have you seen anything that goes to explain why the government is letting these assholes get food, supplies, mail,& give press conferences? It seems like they could be cut off pretty readily from the publicity they crave.

  4. Tom,

    ". . . eyes that can see, . . . mind that can
Hear the music, the thunder of the wings"

There those snow white Steens Mountains, sloping up to the east toward the escarpment beyond which stretches all of Idaho . . . there those mystical white Tundra Swans . . . there those patriotic white male creeps . . .

  5. The worried question of What next? keeps getting answered by everybody but the forever procrastinating-about-when-they-might-feel-llike-leaving peckerwood patriots, personally entitled, grazing-fee exempt, federally subsidized camo-clad welfare queens every last one of 'em, or by the "authorities", who are evidently scared to death by the sight of guns (!), and looking around for the first available clump of sagebrush to hide under. Some among the heroic patriots are now actually claiming the government has jeopardized their means of subsistence by visiting the homes they've left behind, and taking away the foster kids who are their patriotic source of income; the charming "spokesperson" in particular appears to have been conducting a fairly lucrative business for himself in that area. Other than that, not much news except that another patriot managed to overturn a pickup truck on the icy roads around the Refuge in the middle of the night. Come to think of it, the best ally of The People in regaining the Commons -- the public lands that is -- would at this point probably be the rampant sugar cravings of the patriots themselves. After all you can't run a revolution up the back brain of a peckerwood patriot on red meat alone.

Still the "conversation", as they say, continues...
