ReplyDeleteThere's poetry for you. What was good in Smack in 1972 is even more "good" now! Bravo as usual Tom. All love and healing.

ReplyDeleteThat "Money" reference sure caught my attention back when. Maybe I should see what else this Tom Clark guy's got goin'.
ReplyDelete"Money" -- dunno much about that, hardly ever see any, though there's plainly meant to be a lot of it around here, in fact so much of it this week pressing right up in your face, if you live here, as to make you sick with the mere knowledge of it, an obscene amount, really, effectively ruining, over time, never more rapidly than now, what was once a very lovely place... I mean lovely way back, that is, way back when the native inhabitants, who famously had no money, were still here to enjoy the wondrous bit of Earth with which they'd been gifted, and treat it with the respect it has always mutely demanded and always will so demand -- exactly the way they'd always treated it, in fact, and would have gone on treating it had not ten million voracious white people in SUVS showed up with their freeways and tech firms and Stupor Bowls... Now, of course, the whole zone is all just more of filthy polluted automotive White Eyes World, a big toilet jammed with nothing but Money and the 24x7 speeding-metal pursuit of it. And when the pursuers of it do inevitably get it, what do they then have? Time, which everybody wants, because you can do stuff in it. But time, it seems, has a way of dumbly accumulating, building up a weight and gravity of its own, so that no matter how much redundant money you have surrounded yourself with, Time keeps coming in through the back door and piling on and loading more and more of itself upon itself and messing things up... Yes, sweet Time, in contradistinction from Money, which (they say) just lies there in your possession, waiting for you to use it, your obedient servant... mercurial, fluid, shape-shifting Time, on the other hand, will sooner or later definitely take you on... especially if you don't have much money.
ReplyDeleteOr so they say.

TINY SCHOLARS ON MOUNTAINPEAKS
ReplyDeleteTiny scholars on mountainpeaks in
fissures of rock are keeping the
scrolls up to date with moonlight in their
hair and tears in their eyes
Their smocks are moss-ridden and their
cloaks are refuges for both
foxes and hares as lights in the
skies around them flash and are
black then black again and suddenly white so
every valley lights up momentarily with their
subvocal speech as their
pens dipped in cinders and gum write and
small birds
congregate at their feet

Tom,
ReplyDelete"Money /. . . the total / environment / is changed." -- good to see these photos from the underbelly of the beast after all that hoopla . . .
Tiny scholars in moss-ridden smocks, congregating at the feet of the beast, can't see its underbelly for the distracting profusion of money, and so ascend the nearby mountain peaks by mistake, thus attaining a giddily serendipitous elevation without ever passing Go or looking down even once into the beautiful but extremely dangerous Forest of Error... which might entail a fifteen-yard penalty.
ReplyDeleteStill the foxes and hares hidden within their cloaks are happy.
(Their cloaks, of course, are usefully fur-lined.)
