Idomeni, Greece -- Iraqi and Syrian refugees recover after Macedonian police fired tear gas at them on February 29. The men, women and children, many of whom are fleeing war and human rights abuses, tore down a barbed wire fence along the Greek border. Over the past year, Macedonia and its neighbors have built fences to stop the influx of more than a million refugees passing through on their way to Germany. In recent days, Macedonia has barred Afghans from entering and imposed stringent document controls on Syrians and Iraqis, drastically slowing the flow. Roughly 7,000 refugees are now struck on the Greek side of the border, living in squalor: photo by Louisa Gouliamaki/AFP via Newsweek, 29 February 2016

Cizre
it was all herstory then in skeleton town, when
the young girls started going home, walking
down the rutted and muddy street
in Cizre
on which there was always going to be hell to pay, stepping
through the ruins
to their smashed shell houses
lugging their sad endeared bright plastic junk, smiling
gamely for the cameras
on international women's day

Lovely poem, Tom. It would be great to have a book of your poems from BTP along with their corresponding images. Also: I'd like to see that helicopter actually fly.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much, Terry.
ReplyDeleteThe helicopter builder -- his name is Felix Kampwiri, age 45 -- has put his dubious craft together in his garage, there in Malawi, using bits of scrap metal and fibreglass. He's been at work on it four months, so far. It has yet to be licensed much less elevate from the ground, but indeed I take that latter fact to be good news for the health of the clever Felix.
There's been a minor craze in cottage aircraft construction in Africa of late. I've seen a half dozen news stories over the past year or so -- Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria. To my knowledge none of this homemade potting-shed fleet has yet become airborne; again, probably good news (see above).
On the other hand... Igor Sikorsky didn't walk on water while autorotating, then, did he, if he was so smart?!
