"Still a young man..."
                                 but the serious, tired eyes
are the eyes of an old man
                                    who has known suffering
and lives in a very unsafe place. We don't want
to feel it but... we all want to be safe. We want to feel

we are good people. But we have our own pain.
We don't want to have to worry too much
about pain in faraway places
among people we think are nothing like us. Distance
means nearly everything to us.
                                                      Still...
How is it far, if you think of it?

When U.S.-backed forces seized Souad Hamidi's village in northern Syria from Islamic State last week, the 19-year-old swiftly tore off the niqab she had been forced to wear since 2014 and smiled. “I felt liberated,” Hamidi said after swapping her black face-covering veil for a red head scarf. “They made us wear it against our will so I removed it that way to spite them.” For the last two weeks, the Syria Democratic Forces, supported by U.S.-led air strikes, have waged an offensive against the Islamic State-held city of Manbij, near the Syria-Turkey border.: photo by Rodi Said / Reuters, 17 June 2016

  1. Turkish border guards kill eight Syrian refugees: Guardian, 19 June 2016

The desperate situation in northern Syria somehow keeps getting worse. Deals of convenience have been done to shield the EU from further waves of migration. Turkey is now closed, refugees are being shot at the border: sixty so far this year, now last night four children, three women, one man. Actual humans all, guilty of not wanting to be blown up and torn into little bits to be ground into rubble and dust.

  2. Harrowing pictures, Tom. And that line, distance nearly means everything to us, gets to the heart of it.

  3. Thank you, my friend. Ah, distance -- was it not once meant to lend enchantment to the view?
