Stephen Crane: A man saw a ball of gold
A man saw a ball of gold in the sky;
He climbed for it,
And eventually he achieved it --
It was clay.
Now this is the strange part:
When the man went to the earth
And looked again,
Lo, there was the ball of gold.
Now this is the strange part:
It was a ball of gold.
Aye, by the heavens, it was a ball of gold.
A man saw a ball of gold in the sky;
He climbed for it,
And eventually he achieved it --
It was clay.
Now this is the strange part:
When the man went to the earth
And looked again,
Lo, there was the ball of gold.
Now this is the strange part:
It was a ball of gold.
Aye, by the heavens, it was a ball of gold.
Stephen Crane (1871-1900): "A man saw a ball of gold...", from The Black Riders and Other Lines, 1895

The #orb is an entertaining meme—for sure. But I've yet to read an explanation of what they think they are actually doing. —Anyone know?: image via Theodore Grunewald @TedGrunewald, 21 May 2017

Marcel Khalife: Rita (Darwish)

ReplyDeleteMarcel Khalife set Rita to music, singing it accompanied by the oud. I actually co-produced this album with Khalife singing poems by Darwish, came out on Paredon Records, now part of the Smithsonian Folkways collection. It's available on their website. This was the first album of Khalife's music in the US. I met him in Beirut to arrange it during the civil war in 1981 and months before the Israeli invasion. Too bad Darwish didn't live long enough to receive a Nobel Prize.
ReplyDeleteHilton, that's wonderful.
Another performance I like:
Marcel Khalife: Rita et le fusil
The orb stuff is hilarious,Mr. Clark. I keep pushing you for poet laureate...
ReplyDeleteThanks, A.W., but it's not me puts that special glow into things, it's the orb.
