Clark Coolidge: Talking About

The TV blew out and the walls fell down and the bolts
went in just below the ears        there was so much
electricity in those days they had to vent some
into the ocean         so much infinity
we didn't realize         now there's one
white terry cloth bathrobe to a neighborhood
don't ask about wallpaper or the waterglass
the films are all about ghosts in phantom towns
who sit on this toiletlike appliance and dream
you're a star and have your own enclosure
radiant to the dayworld the included ones
apt to see the bodies         the drywall
the nailed frames the charged and sealed bulbs
and you still want to drive funny cars?

    Caetano Veloso: Jokerman [Dylan], live

    1. Standing on the waters casting your bread - While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing. Distant ships sailing into the mist, You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing. Freedom just around the corner for you But with the truth so far off, what good will it do? Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman 2. So swiftly the sun sets in the sky, You rise up and say goodbye to no one, Fools rush in where angels fear to tread, Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one, Shedding off one more layer of skin, Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. 3. You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds, Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister. You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah. But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister. Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame, You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. 4. Well the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers. In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed, Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features. Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space, Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. 5. Well, the riflemans's stalking the sick and the lame, Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain. Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks, Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain. False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin, Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman, 6. It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray, A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet. He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat, Take the motherless children off the street and place them at the feet of a harlot. Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants, Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response, Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.

  2. ... once a young dude... RIP Dennis Edwards, one day short of 74.

Dennis Edwards (1943-2018) ft Siedah Garrett: Don't Look Any Further (video, 1984)

The Temptations: Papa Was a Rollin' Stone (live on Soul Train, 1972)

'Vocal duties [on Papa Was a Rollin' Stone] are performed in a true ensemble style: Temptations singers Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, Richard Street ... alternate vocal lines, taking the role of siblings questioning their mother about their now-dead father; their increasingly pointed questions, and the mother's repeated response ("Papa was a rollin' stone/wherever he laid his hat was his home/and when he died, all he left us was alone") paint a somber picture for the children who have never seen their father and have "never heard nothing but bad things about him."

'Friction arose during the recording of "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" for a number of reasons. The Temptations did not like the fact that [producer Norman] Whitfield's instrumentation had been getting more emphasis than their vocals on their songs at the time, and that they had to press Whitfield to get him to produce ballads for the group. Norman Whitfield forced Dennis Edwards to re-record his parts dozens of times until he finally got the angered, bitter grumble he desired out of the usually fiery-toned Edwards. Whitfield's treatment of the group eventually led to his dismissal as their producer. Legend is that Edwards was angered by the song's first verse: "It was the third of September/That day I'll always remember/'cause that was the day/that my daddy died", as his father was said to have died on that date. It actually was on the third of October, however.'

About the photos BTW, for those curious, today's guest poet, Mr Coolidge, was born in Dhaka, grew up in Jakarta, met his true love at beekeeping school in Skopje, and for many years played the accordion at weddings in St Petersburg.
