Joseph Ceravolo: Mother Land

                     April 27, 1984

I can always go back
to where my land is
born in free die in free
I can always go back
to where I was born.

I can always shed tears
upon my soul, dirt
of my planet, water of my
body, rivers and oceans,
I  can always shed tears.

I can always leave blood
behind my life
if the gods control the flow
even where clouds
form mysteries of sonic flight
I can always leave me.

I can always go back.
I can always shed tears.
I can always leave me.

Joseph Ceravolo: Savage Nocturne

Do you think
because you're out
and I'm reading my palms
like a gypsy,
that you have freedom?

Maybe you do.
And I'm the one in Vulcan's furnace
dipping my burning heart in oil

while one drop of desire
would save my life.
Now that the coast is clear
and the Holy Ghost
is in my nerves; I look for you

but you're not here

Joseph Ceravolo (1934-1988): Savage Nocturne, from Millenium Dust (1982)

  1. Tom,

Wonderful post. I saw The Wedding Present here in Atlanta last week--a good show--thought of you.

    Best,
    Bowie

  2. i enjoyed the aztec camera cover of van halen's 'jump'

the wedding present is not a band i'd encountered before - the lyrics seem not to be the main point of the performance - and yet the title and a couple of lines are disquietingly evocative

    Kennedy

"And now Harry's walked away with Johnny's wife"

"But if Lee's name does come up"

    - if we take "harry" as a version of "ari" short for aristotle, then we are talking about jackie marrying onassis after oswald [allegedly] did the deed in dallas - is this resonance intended, or am i reading meaning into randomness?

  3. mistah c, TWP came out of Leeds in the mid 80s, put out the brilliant George Best LP 1989, several successive great works ensued, peak production 1993 when they issued a new single every month, each one terrific, not to be missed, good enough to make you almost believe in music again, living-legendary thenceforth, as to meanings there are meanings everywhere, 12 singles in 12 months is meaning intense production is meaning, of course no meaning w/o audience, their audience was big, a Weado was a thing to be... at some live shows the "apple pie" section of Kennedy was joyously greeted by mass flinging of same toward David Gedge - triumph!! meaning!!

But the meanings that mean the most are those protected in the sanctuary of the penetralium of the mystery, a place like the ark of the covenant in the boiler room, best not get too close, cd get burnt.

The Wedding Present: Kennedy (from Bizarro, 1989)

    Lost your love of life?
    Too much apple pie
Oh have you lost your love of life?
    Too much apple pie
And now Harry's walked away with Johnny's wife

You've got to pick some people up
You've got to let some people go
But if Lee's name does come up
Oh well I really want to know
Because everybody loves a T.V. show

    Lost your love of life?

  5. About the Jump cover by AC (also mentioned by mistah c), posted here to shed a drop of sidewise historical glimmer on the reuters pic at bottom, might be the best cover of a bad song ever, the AC single came out 6 mos after VH original, a "school of thought" holds that the long guitar blowoutro in AC Loaded and live versions is sendup, to get that all you have to do is look at the early VH or worse later VH (DL Roth) versions, worse yet the Billy Idol arena cover (and then you realize it's Triumph of the Will in drag) in any case the song is given or brought to, life..

Wd have posted Roddy's greenish in cargo pants live version, but so many little things... the aquarium, the cigarette...

Aztec Camera: Jump live @La Edad de Oro c mid 80s

The 2 Holy Joe ditties, BTW, common theme... no cargo pants.
