"Robin Moyer, USA, Black Star for Time. Beirut, Lebanon, 18 September 1982. Aftermath of massacre of Palestinians directed by Lebanese Forces with the complicity of senior members of the Israeli Cabinet and Defence Forces and conducted by Christian Phalangists and members of the South Lebanon Army in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. Moyer saw flares burst above the camps, and went there to discover piles of bodies - brutally shot. He photographed for hours surrounded by the smell of death, while soldiers joked around. The killers were never brought to justice.

Joseph Ceravolo: Lament #2 for Lebanon

                     September 1982

Tomorrow night before the winds blow down
the hungry trees: they're swaying in the mist,
I want to stop this grove from filling.
Stars in our sleep ride the massacre
in corners of destruction's nest.
Suns of chords    unknown
like dialysis or death.

Oh Lebanon
land of wood,   land of wood
defoliated dreams, decapitated screams

Like a pawn you lie
in the middle of the beast,
in the midst of an
old land of sorrows,
of controversy crossing the soul.
A dark walk in the desert!
A scorched memory's toll!

All the fake gods
have gathered in the night

and battle in the blood dawn.

Joseph Ceravolo (1934-1988): Lament #2 for Lebanon (September 1982), from Collected Poems (2013)

  2. Duncan, thanks very much for seeing straight into the heart of the matter, if the matter be the post (or history) and the heart be the old land of sorrows, and the controversy forever crossing it, here through or by way of the graphic nexus (accident?) of the two rather forlorn looking juxtaposed crosses, the one fancy, the other as simple as fingers crost in the desert in anticipation of god knows what might now be expected... thousands more dead and ruin'd souls in a place where the jews decided a decade ago no life shall exist without continual torment physical and psychological imposed upon those they have usurped from the land under the guise of some sort of berserk religious nationalism of an insane solipsistic strain based in ancient fairytales told to cozen, and helped along by rich friends in many high places.

And helpfully today the jews, in the great spirit of jew negotiation, have NOT surprised anyone by promising in future to shoot to kill anybody who sets foot near that precious line they drew in someone else's sand! The sweeties they are! Always playing by the rules... the ones they made up!

If the poor longsuffering dude up there on the fancy cross really had any cosmic clout, that solitary strand of wire on the jerrybuilt crap telephonepole cross - gazan make-do tech, more beautiful than the entire Arseboke silicon valley "campus", with its ample lands and grounds all about the fringes of which at this moment the homeless flocks are awakening and scrapping over how to find breakfast and where to locate a proper pot to piss in - would be crackling with news of the arrival on the scene, after all these years, of... hold the presses... dare we say it ... just that wee bit of justice.

  3. Keeping in mind of course what nobody wants to keep in mind - forgetting the longer stretch of memory that would include Sabra and Shatila (a memory now ruled off by information border fences, relegated to trivia garbagecan forums in honour of whatever's new on nutflakes or the revival of Roseanne!) - the fact that the jews invaded and rained white phosphorous down upon Gaza in Dec-Jan 08-09 and then in July-Aug 2014 attempted to destroy/eradicate it from Earth entirely, in a onesided air war horror that in many ways has become the new template for regional statement... just so we are ready for what's coming next.

The current smart thing to say about Syria, that the revolution meant nothing, was a figment of orb-gazing saudi diabolists in long skirts, or of whatever strain of terrorist is in worst odour this week, or even of wishful murican thinktank libs and should have been given up long ago in favour of a good job w/benefits and two cars in the carport - amounts to the parallel suggestion Hamas should give it up, troublemakers that they are.

OK my fellow little ragheads let's all lie down and let the tanks run over us then, it's the going thing.
