Mariners don't think too much about the deeps
Of the Other at the bottom of the ocean.
Like a sort of north star which in shining
Accelerates all my thought from far off,
Identity presses on me so all day
As to tease sleep out of my anxious mind.
Melancholy lunes, identifying with
Tom dismal and forlorn and spitting blood.
Heart, ever out of its element, keeps
Identifying with Hamlet, a dying
Sun beats down, the confused heifer lows,
Feeling nature's mass fall and spill like
A blade. Light plays cleanly upon bronze.
Above the victim's head the priest suspends
Our fear of death. And this abandoned town --
Where love melds into death, and vanishing
Sleep fills itself with ominous programs,
The whole fate drama hoving into view
Before dawn under the lyric stars --
Tacks around the cove and disappears.

Second to the last gas stop, Ventura Boulevard, 1955 | Jimmy in what I believe is his last picture, snapped on his
Leica by his friend Bill Hickman. The camera will be found at the crash
site and bundled together with his other personal belongings, shipped
back to Indiana. Some months later a relative will run across the Leica
and wonder if any exposures had survived. Bill Hickman will confirm he
took the snap. This little gas station was only a few blocks from
Jimmy's log cabin on Sutton Street, The Mobil Station sat on the NE
corner of Ventura Boulevard and Tyrone just across the street from Casa
de Cadillac (a valley landmark). It was jokingly called Casa de Petrol.
In this shot you can clearly see the trailer meant to be carrying the
Porsche behind the Ford wagon. They will stop one more time for gas and
snacks at Blackwell's Corner up on Highway 46 where it meets Highway 33,

Jimmy behind the wheel of his brand-new Porsche 550 Spyder with
friend (and Porsche mechanic) Rolf Wütherich riding shotgun. The '55
Ford Country Squire is also Jimmy's. It is being driven by Bill Hickman
(friend and stunt driver, drove the black Charger in Bullitt) with
photographer Sandy Roth in the right seat. The Ford wagon is pulling a
trailer which was intended to carry the Spyder after Jimmy had enough
seat time to insure the Porsche had sufficient miles on it to qualify
for their intended class at Salinas.We're looking north on Vine
Street at La Mirada Avenue. Jimmy is parked at the curb in front of
Competition Motors (garage) at 1219 N. Vine Street, the building of
which is long gone. But that building in the background with the
sidewalk awnings is still there doing business as a pawn shop. The

ReplyDeleteAlmost no coverage of the confrontation at the Gaza border.in US media. Palestinians have nothing to lose. In a couple of years Gaza will be uninhabitable with no water or electricity. A slow motion crime.

ReplyDeleteNo, there's not likely to be coverage unless / until massive bloodletting which of course still may ensue. Five weeks still to go... As I understand it, the mirrors proved pretty ineffectual in the actual fray, as a defensive tactic against a military from another dimension. As symbolic tactic however, top drawer.
