William Carlos Williams: Proletarian Portrait

A big young bareheaded woman
in an apron

Her hair slicked back standing
on the street

One stockinged foot toeing
the sidewalk

Her shoe in her hand. Looking
intently into it

She pulls out the paper insole
to find the nail

That has been hurting her

William Carlos Williams (1883-1963): Proletarian Portrait, from An Early Martyr and Other Poems, 1935

  1. Every single photograph in this post is fantastic, including the snapshots from William Carlos Williams. The second of his poems is devastating.

  2. Thank you dear Nora. I thought the same. All hail every single photographer... and William Carlos Williams.

  3. Extraordinary work. I can’t imagine the effort. You can’t do this over night. Maybe you can? Of course you can. Speechless. Such an extraordinarily well crafted thing this is. That’s it. Nothing else to say.

  4. Thank you, Tom. I can't. Yet do. And did. Pretty crazy.

    ... and way too OLD.
