In Darkness: The pains of children

A woman carries a baby as she goes through a police line in front of a reception center in Opatovac, Croatia, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015. Scuffles have broken out between Croatian police and asylum-seekers after they were barred from entering a newly opened reception center meant to register those seeking sanctuary in Europe.

Joseph Ceravolo: May 3, 1984

The pains of children
growing up
..are solid,
tearing mystery out
.....of the heart

weighed down with generations
of melancholy
.....and doubt

Sharp is the pain
..of flight and escape
weighing heavily on the fears
.....of youth,
O pray for the drama
.....of forgiveness,
the penance of bitter relief,

.....the drowning of sorrows

and the spring of beginning
.....with new eyes
.....that mix with
.....each other's hearts
and bring newer pains.

Joseph Ceravolo (1934-1988): May 3, 1984 ("The pains of children...), from Collected Poems (2013)

    Save the Children

If you're driving through the country on a lazy afternoon
Or you're watching your children playing after school
They seem to be so unaware of
The things that they soon have to take care of

We've got to do something to save the children
Soon it will be their turn to try and save the world
Right now they seem to play such a small part of
The things that they soon be right at the heart of

My little Tommy he said he wants to be a fireman
And little Mary she said she got to teach school
If we know all we say we know about the problems
Why can't we do something to try and solve them

We've got to do something to save the children
Soon it will be their turn to try and save the world
We got to do something to save the children
    To save the children
    To save the children

Marvin Gaye: Save the Children (Live in LA, 1972)

    Save the Children

I just want to ask a question
    Who really cares?
To save a world in despair
There'll come a time, when the world won't be singin'
Flowers won't grow, bells won't be ringin'
    Who really cares?
Who's willing to try to save a world
    That's destined to die
When I look at the world it fills me with sorrow
Little children today are really gonna suffer tomorrow
Oh what a shame, such a bad way to live
All who is to blame, we can't stop livin'
    Live, live for life
    But let live everybody
    Live life for the children
    Oh, for the children
You see, let's save the children
    Let's save all the children
Save the babies, save the babies
If you wanna love, you got to save the babies
    All of the children
    But who really cares
    Who's willing to try
    Yes, to save a world
    Yea, save our sweet world
Save a world that is destined to die
Oh, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
    Oh, oh dig it everybody

    -- Marvin Gaye / Renaldo Benson / Alfred W. Cleveland, 1971

The Call: The Walls Came Down (1983)

    The Walls Came Down

    Well they blew the horns
    And the walls came down
    They'd all been warned
    And the walls came down
    They just stood there laughing
    They're not laughing anymore
    The walls came down
    Sanctuary fades
    Congregation splits
    Nightly military raids
    The congregation splits
    It's a song of assassins
    Ringin' in your ears
    We got terrorist thinking
    Playing on fears
    Well they blew the horns
    And the walls came down
    They'd all been warned
    But the walls came down
I don't think there are any Russians
    And there ain't no Yanks
    Just corporate criminals
    Playin' with tanks

    -- Michael Been, 1983

  3. tearing mystery out
    of the heart

Right now they seem to play such a small part of
The things that they soon be right at the heart of

With these particular faces, these records of hurt, fear and abuse, you can see the whole laid out if you look carefully, corporate criminals and all. Mystery's gone.

  4. The reiterated generations of iPhones, one upon another in an endless cascade, haven't yet been able to wash that human stain out of the fabric, deep, dark and as old as the shadows that lie upon the burnt-out hills at sundown...
