Shopping for the Design: The New Militia Wish List (You Can't Always Get What You Want)

An armed, self-styled militia group has been occupying a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon since Saturday night. Calling themselves the Citizens for Constitutional Freedom, the group is led by sons of Cliven Bundy, a Nevada rancher who has engaged previously in armed standoffs with the federal government. As It Happens guest-host Helen Mann speaks with one of the group's leaders, the eldest Bundy son, Ryan. Here is part of their interview:
The master, who is the federal government, has got a whip hanging over them. - Ryan Bundy 
Helen Mann: How many of you are there right now?
Ryan Bundy: That's not information we let out.

HM: Are you concerned that the FBI will raid the refuge?
RB: You know, we'll deal with that as it comes, but I don't believe that's really going to happen, no. 
HM: When you say you'll "deal with that," what would you do?
RB: We would posture defensively as need be. 
HM: You'd be willing to open fire? 
RB: Did you not hear me? I answered your question. I said we'd posture defensively as need be. 
HM: Well, defence doesn't necessarily mean opening fire. It could just be standing your ground.
RB: That's right, it doesn't, so please don't construe that it does.

HM: That's why I was asking you, I didn't want to make an assumption.
RB: You know what? There's some things you just shouldn't ask. It seems like the media, whether it be you, or the mainstream especially, they're always trying to squeeze... always trying to push things to some sort of violent action. It seems like you guys can't wait to see some sort of showdown, you can't wait to see some violence. I just don't understand that. Pay attention to the principles that are being taught here, and what needs to happen, rather than trying to push a fight.
HM: I'm not pushing anything, I just don't want to make any assumptions.
RB: Well then don't ask those questions, then. 
HM: It's my job to ask questions, sir. How well armed are you guys? 
RB: Again... [prolonged silence].  
HM: Sorry, you cut out a little bit. Are you still there?
RB: No, I didn't cut out. If you want to continue this conversation, then I would ask you don't ask those kinds of questions. Let's stick to the principles and the reasons why we're here.
HM: Alright, what are your demands?
RB: [Laughs]. You don't just quit, do you?

The interview continues. When asked why Bundy does not have the full support of Harney County locals, he replies:
  
RB: The reason these people are fearful to come out and support [us] is because they're being treated as though they are slaves. And the master, who is the federal government, has got a whip hanging over them. If they even lift their head, or raise their eyes a little bit, then they're snapped with another strike. And therefore they fear. People of Harney County are coming here and expressing that to us over and over, they express how their neighbours are in fear to do the same. 
HM: When do you think you'll leave the refuge?
RB: When we have accomplished the design. Thank you.

Yes, minds like steel traps coated with molasses, every last one of 'em. What hope have PETA or the Paiutes or the Greater Sage-Grouse, staring in the asymmetric face of all this vivid and irrefutable testimony to the dramatic acceleration of the decline of the species?

Sorting the several brigades and platoons now on the scene in this semi-spontaneous Gathering of the Piltdown Survivals and their freehand-shopping-list-crafting Better Halves having become an insurmountable headache -- at one point I found myself having to split horsehairs in order to distinguish an Idaho Three Percenter from a Pacific Patriot Networker simply by the relative angles of skull tapering -- I've elected this time not to attempt to identify or categorize or in any way put, as it were, a fine point on anything, in the photo captions.

Because of course simply from looking at the iconic pinups you would stand at least a 50% chance of mistaking a Three Percenter for a mere Marine Corps combat veteran with a righteous Right to Rage.

For example it was evidently an insult to the Corps and all it stands for to be blamed for the antics of the Bundy Bunch Bodyguard, of whose awesome pulchritude far too much has been revealed here already (we have however managed to continue to resist posting the DUI photos of this slumbering giant in extreme blotto state, with that Bacardi bottle tenderly cradled in one intricately tatted arm).

Dude claimed to be... like, you know, whatever he thought the shivering gawkers and gapers with the media credentials and microphones wanted to hear.

But then, come to find out...

Really it's getting so hard any more to keep a bonafide popular hero's reputation upright, when the cardboard simulations keep toppling so easily and crashing down like so many giant golden Maos to cold hard permafrost to be scattered to the winds of celebrity eternity, to drift about forever along with all those trillions of other brief and quickly vanishing five-second bits... you know, Tay-Tay, El Chapo, all the top fashion-points winners at last night's Golden Globs, and so on.

But let me now turn this over to "sources":

Veterans Today, January 8, 2016:

Yes, we already knew that the militia thugs who have seized the Malheur Wildlife Refuge are a bunch of wannabe tough guys who think they have valid reasons for being such monumental asshats, but it also turns out that some of them are downright liars who are pretending to be military veterans.

Brian Cavalier, who is the “personal bodyguard” to Ammon Bundy has told reporters that he served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of the Marines. One tiny problem: the Marine Corps has absolutely no record of him. Why might that be? Because he never enlisted in any branch.

In addition to Cavalier, Blaine Cooper also claims to be a Marine veteran. The truth, however, is much different: Cooper was on the “Delayed Entry Program” and never even went to boot camp. Guess he realized he wasn’t cut out to be a real hero so now he has to carry a gun and pretend he’s a man.

Cavalier told reporters recently:

“I’m a retired United States Marine, I can rage.”

No, you’re a pretend Marine and all you can do is lie. When confronted by the media about his false claims of military service, including what the Marines said, Cavalier nervously replied:

“That’s unfortunate that someone would say that. I’m not commenting on anything. I told you what it is.”

All the action out there on the Refuge -- those Bundys talking about slave masters whips, not letting much information out, "postur[ing] defensively as need be," not going home until "we have accomplished the design. Thank you."

Wonder who they'll be voting for come November . . .

On that point... as the rains begin again... -- Can the hallucinations be starting up all over, or did I just see a news bit about Ryan Bundy saying that he thinks the ship of state will be a whole lot safer in the hands of... was it Carly Fiorina?
