Giuseppe Ungaretti: Pellegrinaggio

Valloncello dell'Albero Isolato il 16 agosto 1916

In agguato
in queste budella
di macerie
ore e ore
ho strascicato
la mia carcassa
usata dal fango
come una suola
o come un seme
di spinalba

Ungaretti
uomo di pena
ti basta un'illusione
per farti coraggio

Un riflettore
di là
mette un mare
nella nebbia

Pilgrimage
Valley of the Isolated Tree 16 August 1916

Crouched in ambush
in these twisted
internal passages
among broken things
hour on hour
I've dragged
a husk
through the mud
an old shoe sole or
a seed of spiny whitethorn

Ungaretti man
of pain
an illusion
is enough to give you heart

Out there
in the fog
a searchlight
creates a sea

Everybody's flashing their ships about these days. Do the apolkalypse, baby!

Thanks very much, Sandra.

At least the Russian mothership is so politically incorrect as to smoke constantly.

There is an obscure fascination that develops after three or four nights of Shipwatching on the Bosphorus with Yörük Isik and alper böler.

One grows to understand that each has his own distinctive perspective on these curiously intimately scaled maritime chuffings and puffings and comings and goings.

Yörük is on the European side of the Straits, alper on the Asian.

This powerfully affects the POV.

I believe it was Yörük who recently sussed out the interesting subterfuges of the "innocent" seeming cargo vessels transiting in and out of the Black Sea were actually military resupply ships in (not very good) disguise.

The Royal Navy (retired) types are having a fine time rollicking and bollocking about re. the embarrassingly smoke-belching carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which has lately passed through the English Channel en route from Barents to, ultimately, Syria,

The poor old tub is in trouble in the Med, and now The State Dept has even leaned on Spain via NATO so that the emergency pit stop at Ceuta, requested by Russian Naval Command, has been refused them.

A bit of an affront I'd say speaking of apokaliptik.

Duncan, once again grand thanks and, yes, that has to be the backdrop. Robert Wyatt's beautiful bittersweet version. The song has been in my broken old head along with the Shipspotting views over these past weeks -- see keel-laying.

I remember a few days spent Tyneside, '64 or so, as that industry was dying.

The song feels so relevant now, again. Every tech worker in the West, diving for pearls, every day.

Looking at the present heavily armoured guided missile destroyers and corvettes, we can look back at that Falklands object lesson in why the armour should be so thick. Almost as thick as the politicians.

Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy's birthday.

It's just a rumor that was spread around town
By the women and children, soon we'll be shipbuilding

Well I ask you
The boy said 'Dad, they're going to take me to task
But I'll be home by Christmas.'

It's just a rumor that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The results of their shipbuilding.

With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls.

It's just a rumor that was spread around town
A telegram for a picture postcard
Within weeks they'll be reopening the shipyard
And notifying the next of kin
Once again.

It's all we're skilled in
We will be shipbuilding.

With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls.
