We are brave.

We are strong.

We are indomitable.

Our way of life is the best way of life.

It is the only way of life we have.

We will defend it to the death

of the other guy.

And then we'll jump in the car

and pick up something at safeway.

And then we'll apply

and then we'll secure

the grant

the assets

the help we need

to come out on top

the way it was meant to be.

We won't attempt to write poems
about any of this

because we don't know

what a poem even is.

We'll continue to emit

noncommittally

the glib ellipticals preferred

by the professionals

of the professariat

oblique diagonals

wiggling bits of evasive dribble

only other fakers can hear

and we'll feel good

about ourselves

at the conference

and in the committee

and in time croquet net

will assemble our wit

into a 600 page opus

with copious

notes.

And all the outtakes

will make up at least two

more groaning
volumes.

We can see it all now,

the promotions,

the tours,

the launches.

And by the way please
hurry up and

clean up that mess

over there on the floor.

We killed it but

we don't like looking at it.
