Viking was a Common Germanic word which appeared in Old English even before any Norse invasions could have taken place. The Old English form of it was wicing (from wic 'a settlement' and the termination -ing meaning something like 'pertaining to'), and the earliest sense, found in the early eighth century, was 'robber' or 'pirate', for settlements in those times were commonly brought about by force, and to the inhabitants displaced by them the new settlers seemed much like robbers.

To the West distant mountains, the Big Lake
To the Northeast. Dead trees and almost dead
In the front yard, the front door locked and nailed,
A handpump in the sink. Outside, a land
Of gophers, cottontails and rattlesnakes,
In good years of alfalfa, oats and wheat.
Root cellar, blacksmith shop, milk house, and barn,
Granary, corral. An old World Almanac
To thumb at night, the child coughing, the lamp smoked,
The chores done. So he came to her one night,
To the front room, now bedroom, and moved in.
Nothing was said, nothing was ever said.
And then the child died and she disappeared.

So easy to enjoy your Hrothgar series of poems, Tom. "…sobbing there/battering upon boat hull with bent and broken buckler/bared the bench-boards abroad/spread beds and bolsters…" got me itching to raid the neighbor's cabinets for that last bit of aquavit. The sad Cunningham poem and Montana pictures seem a common, sobering story even now. 50 years ago and 50 hence? Thanks.

Easy is relative. With a dictionary on the table, a wiki-reference check-in & Poetry Foundation searchs I can find a path. This is a 600-level course, man. I have nightmares about missing the final. Got to actually listen to Cunningham read several poems this afternoon! That was awesome! And I’ll be the old fella in front row tomorrow.
