Huxley Asunder, 1961 | May 13, 1961: Aldous Huxley’s Hollywood Hills home lays in ruins
after a 1,200-acre brush fire. Neighbors Lou Zamperini, former Olympic
track star, and his wife Cynthia survey the ruins. The
wind-driven blaze destroyed eight homes and damaged 16 others. Destroyed
with Huxley’s Deronda Drive home were many of his original manuscripts. The
Los Angeles Times reported the next day that “Huxley, his wife and a
passerby saved some manuscripts, notes and research material. Huxley said one of the rescued manuscripts was a first draft of his latest book, ‘Island.’" One of the other homes destroyed was the Castle, a Hollywood Hills landmark owned by Malcolm Small. Los Angeles Times staff photographer Don Cormier took the image above, which ran on Page 1 the next morning. From the Los Angeles Times Archive blog.: photo by Michael Ryerson, 6 March 2018
