curious

And then life emerged

somehow again, exposed and naked

poking its nose into the large cold unwelcoming world

                                Goin' my way?

Love

of it looks out

from the culvert on Marin

where the underground creek lets out

this time of year, curious

and not inappropriately

shy

        skulking

away from traffic

back into the dark

so fraught

out there

and perilous

but soon enough

the young raccoons

ascend boldly to scare

off, then pilfer

the food of the meek

outdoor night cat

main chance the defiant ones

opportunistic survivalists

would live to exactly

22 1/2

in "the wild"

                   here

on suicide street

if they make it

as long as their first November

it will have been on nerve alone
