Nothing is without place,

in mind, in physical apprehension --

or if "a dagger of the mind" is the purpose,

hold on to it for dear life, or else kill somebody.

Just when I thought I had it made, I lost it.

Just when I knew what to do, I was an old man.

You hear that bird sing in the tree, there,

you know still what a tree is?

Love is a place, not a person, love is

a weather of time, a convenience to absent sorrows.

But talk is the cheapest of all, means what it wants to,

waits up for no one, always goes home alone.

Donald Trump Jr. Criticizes London Mayor After Deadly Attack: Liam Stack, The New York Times, 22 March 2017

It has become something of an online custom in the social media age to react to tragic news stories — like Wednesday’s attack in London — with well-meaning if sometimes rote messages like “thoughts and prayers.” But that does not appear to be Donald Trump Jr.’s style.

“You have to be kidding me?!” Mr. Trump said Wednesday afternoon on Twitter, as details of the episode — which left at least five dead, including the assailant, and 40 injured — continued to unfold. The message continued, “Terror attacks are part of living in big city, says London Mayor Sadiq Khan.”

Mr. Trump, the oldest son of President Trump, was calling attention to an article from September in The Independent, a British newspaper, that described Mr. Khan’s reaction to a bombing then in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City.

Mr. Trump mischaracterized the London mayor’s remarks. Mr. Khan did not describe terrorism as “part of living in a big city,” as if bombings and shootings were an inescapable fact of life. He said that terrorism preparedness, including providing sufficient support to the police, was “part and parcel of living in a great global city.”

“That means being vigilant, having a police force that is in touch with communities; it means the security services being ready, but it also means exchanging ideas and best practice,” Mr. Khan said in a video interview published by The Evening Standard, another British paper. (For the record, Mr. Khan did say the victims of the Chelsea bombing were in his “thoughts and prayers.”)

“Nothing is more important to me than keeping Londoners safe,” Mr. Khan added. “I want to be reassured that every single agency and individual involved in protecting our city has the resources and expertise they need to respond in the event that London is attacked.”

Mr. Trump’s tweet was not well received by Britons, who were still learning details of the attack when he weighed in. On Twitter, Wes Streeting, a member of Parliament from the Labour Party, accused Mr. Trump of capitalizing on the attack in London and called him “a disgrace.”

Ciaran Jenkins, a correspondent for Britain’s Channel 4, asked the president's son on Twitter if he thought his remarks were “helpful.”

“Did you even read the article before goading London’s Mayor during a live incident?” he wrote. He added, “Headline is based on very first sentence, which if you’d bothered to read it could apply to any major city in the world. Key word: ‘threat.’ ”

Mr. Trump declined to elaborate later on Wednesday. “I’m not going to comment on every tweet I send,” he said in an email.

If you missed it, this is the lead photo in Saturday’s NYT style feature, titled Donald Trump Jr. Is His Own Kind of Trump.
• His own kind of Trump … on his Dad’s estate.
• With apologies to George Washington.
• And apologies to Bedford, N.Y., where the photo was taken, because the hint of the bayou also conjures: “drain the swamp.”
• Trumps love uniforms.
• Always on the stump.
• The article dwells on the outdoor Donald Jr. as a hunter. But the adventurist MO doesn’t square with an uncomfortable pose and an affected look emphasizing vision, depth and introspection. Everybody knew that George Bush was milking the rancher role. All Dubya had to do to meet the minimum criteria for believability, however, was clear some brush. That’s why the photo-op is so famous. This composition, on the other hand, registers more as a clothing ad, the esoteric setting and obvious pose serving as visual contrast to showcase the brand.
• The reason Kruse's reference to “The Giving Tree” is so hilarious is because of the blurring of the difference between hunting and nature, at least to the more urban, liberal folks who read the NY Times. The latter cues birds, sunshine, verdant forests, conservation. In that register, this photo might not wreak of death, exactly, but it doesn’t equate a seedling administration and a supposedly young, rising figure to anything vibrant or growing.
• Even if we’re keeping the categories completely straight though, there is also this: "Trump's Budget Would Be A Disaster For Anglers And Hunters". [Forbes 16 March 2017]
• If there is something here that is organic to the Trumps, it’s one more treatment of land as a setting or a background. It doesn’t matter how much Donnie actually loves hunting and fishing, nature to the Trumps is commodification.
• There’s always a tell with the Trumps. Like the spankin’ new boots. Because the Trumps are nothing if not publicity hounds, the common outfit that demonstrates Don Jr. is an outdoorsman (intended, also, to resonate with the base) had to be dressed up somehow.
• It’s so much easier for the media to do its pandering, or throw a bone, in the style section. Style or fashion, especially with such an emphasis on photos, should not serve as the vehicle to shower attention free of context.

President Donald J. Trump released an outline for his 2018 budget today. If it passes as is, the big winner will be the military. One of the biggest losers: Anglers and hunters.

Among the proposed cuts that would negatively affect the nation’s sportsmen and women:

1. The Environmental Protection Agency, with a proposed 31% budget cut of $2.6 billion. If you believe that climate change has nothing to do with hunting and fishing, I encourage you to check out the work done by Todd Tanner and his organization, Conservation Hawks, now.
2. The Army Corps of Engineers, with a proposed 16% budget cut of $1 billion. I don’t always agree with the work that the Corps does on some of our waterways, but the agency does restore wetlands, enforce environmental laws and provide stewardship for our natural places.
3. The Department of the Interior, with a proposed 12% budget cut of $1.5 billion. Here is a haunting paragraph from The New York Times on this cut:

The budget would increase funding for programs that drill for oil and gas on public lands and cut funding for programs such as the National Heritage Areas and the National Wildlife Refuge Fund. It would cut $120 million from a program that acquires new federal lands.

What? (Italics mine.)

Trump also proposes to do away with the following:

1. The USDA Water and Wastewater loan and grant program, which helps keep our waterways clean.
2. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grants, which go to research, education and management of marine life.
3. Funding for the UN climate change program.
4. Funding for the Clean Power Plan.
5. Funding for the Advanced Research Projects Agency’s energy arm, which promotes clean energy solutions.
6. Funding for the Global Climate Change Initiative.
7. Funding for Great Lakes Restoration and for the Chesapeake Bay.

In recent weeks, Trump has also nullified a stream protection rule and attempted a rollback of the Clean Water Rule.

Remember: Trump actively courted the vote of sportsmen and women in an interview with  Field and Stream Magazine last year, saying: “This is magnificent land. And we have to be great stewards of this land. And the hunters do such a great job—I mean, the hunters and the fishermen and all of the different people that use that land.”

More than that, his son, Donald Trump, Jr.—an angler and hunter—styled himself as the new administration's true champion of sportsmen and women. In an interview with Wide Open Spaces the day after the election, Trump, Jr., was asked why the outdoorsmen of America should support a Trump administration. His answer:

We are going to make sure these things are taken care of. The big joke at Christmas this year was that the only job in government that I would want is with the Department of Interior. I understand these issues. It’s something I’m passionate about. I will be the very loud voice about these issues in my father’s ear.

Anglers and hunters could use that voice about right now.

Here’s the thing: I’m sure some of these agencies are bloated, and perhaps there’s an argument for streamlining them a bit (my preference would be for more--but smarter--dollars going towards protecting the environment, habitat and fish and game populations). But this budget, in total, would be a disaster for anglers and hunters. And it’s well past the time to make our own voices heard.
