An intruder (visual language)

I tried to figure out what this kid might be thinking.
He doesn't feel comfortable. An intruder.
He's apprehensive -- curious and watchful, alert
but plainly shying away.
There are signs of ambivalence, uncertainty,
maybe even imminent panic
in the extremely equivocal body language.
Hands clasped as if in fearful prayer
quietly implore, "don't let him hurt me."
His right index finger poking thoughtfully into his cheek
seems to be forcing his gaze back in the direction of danger
while the gentle yet firm hand on his shoulder, the hand of a woman,
countering his natural gesture of recoil,
seems to urge him on --
providing support, reassurance, encouragement, but also impelling him toward
the threat of some dreadful if undefined harm
that may be inescapable.

The visual anthropologist in me loved discovering that teenagers of all backgrounds like to hang out in gas station. These Mennonite girls are no exception. Helena Fehr and her best friends walk from her house to the Pemex, where they wait for the boys in their community to take them for a ride. They're called "parties", and when asked, most couples said they met at a party or on the street, both synonymous for this teen rite of passage. #mexico #menonitas: image via Melissa Lytle @melissalytle 15 May 2017

The boy is right, as though his body knows. There's no waking from this, no soft landing.

True dat alas, Skip. The turbulence is rocking the hull. A hollow solidity everywhere, skull echoes of what absolute foreknowledge probably holds, catacombs, boneyards of the not yet quite conscious, lucky to not yet know what we do not yet know.
