Incipient light
The day is just beginning to happen
over there across the bay
a few pink cloud wisps trailing
above the green and beige
crest
of Mt Tam
Blackie on his nightstand perch
over the precipice
beneath the redwood A.
with flashlight
down there in the dark pied
pipering the starveling
ferals Spotty Boy he of the one closed eye
hangs back
today
his sisters Sweetie and Silky rush down to the street
in a beeline
toward A.
who feeds them
then take turns brushing
up against her legs
and spatting
over temporary ownership
of her
any day now
the bank will close in
but later on A. says Look
and there is Spotty Boy
asleep in a planter box
on the porch of the ghost
house
At Matanaka Farm
This granary, privy and schoolhouse at Matanaka [on the South Island] are New Zealand's oldest surviving farm buildings. These buildings are registered Category I historic places with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. The three largest buildings were prefabricated in Sydney, and the granary and stable still have their original "Patented Galvanised Tinned Iron" roofs. The stable has a harness room, stalls for the horses and a gig room. Fodder was stored in the loft and there was a dovecote in the loft at the north end. The storeroom was probably the place where bulk supplies were kept, since there are orders scribbled on the original interior lining. The granary stands, like the stable, on its original site. The privy, which was placed over a large pit, was once nearer the homestead. The school was originally a barn, here in the farmyard, but was shifted nearer to the house in the 19th century for use as a schoolroom. It was shifted back to the farmyard about the beginning of the 20th century. It is divided into a schoolroom and a room for the teacher: photo by Karora, 23 April 2008
This is not a memoir, so that
as we rolled over the small rise
and saw, set on
that bare hill, the plain
wooden farm buildings
painted a uniform
deep red, with faded
and lightly rusted corrugated
iron roofs, and tawny
grasses swaying all about
against the two
tone blue of sea and sky,
we knew
no one would remember
we had once
seen these things.

My Favorite Couple. She told me that he'll fight anyone to defend her. I said, I guess I shouldn't tell him that I didn't care about the t-shirts, I just wanted a shot of your tits. She looked at me unsure, despite the gleam in my eye, then to him and said, no, I probably shouldn't. As for him, I shot them where they were standing with the Hudson and the sun's hazy glare behind them. He said, wait a second after seeing the shot, and then moved into this position while schooling me on how I should have the sun behind me as if it's some secret revealed. Him - See what I mean? Me - I'll try to remember. He told me he loves her t-shirt, with blatant jealousy.: photo by Larry Cohen, 26 June 2011

Cityscape. A view of the San Francisco skyline looking northwest towards the Golden Gate strait. The Golden Gate Bridge can be seen through the incipient fog of the late afternoon. My vantage point was the former Cityscape Restaurant on the 46th floor of the San Francisco Hilton at Union Square. That venue is now closed to the general public and is instead rented out to gatherings. In this instance I was attending my employer's leadership offsite in San Francisco. I was there two evenings after dark and one late afternoon when I made this image. When it was dark, the light reflections off the glass were unworkable, not to mention I couldn't see a reasonable composition. In the late afternoon the reflections were somewhat better and I could see my compositions. I liked this vista and the one directly to the north. The view of the nearby Financial District was unimpressive and I could see only a sliver of the Bay Bridge. What I really would have liked was to shoot during the blue hour, turning off the internal lights. But that wasn't to be.: photo by Kirk Lougheed, 13 March 2014
