White's photos of your home town remind us what survival looks like.

We may surf the next wave for a while but I can't see us staying afloat.

John White, one of the great photojournalists, a religious man, born on a Sunday into a family of preachers in North Carolina, worked for a very long time as staff photographer for the Chicago Sun-Times, winning a Pulitzer along the way (1982), before being laid off, along with the rest of the paper's photography staff, in 2013, a victim of shifting business models and iPhones.

After the shock of getting his notice ("Right now I'm not trying to understand it"), White said, "I started June 23, 1969, and I thought, maybe after two years it will get boring... To this day, it's never boring, because you're doing it not for you, but for others."

White believed in life as service, and took his subject to be "Ordinary, everyday people, these are the treasures, that's what's important."

Thanks for the good word, Duncan, and all love as ever to you & K, in this thin season.
