No words or diversions today.... the word Aleppo has completely changed its meaning in a few years : for centuries now it will mean the sort of thing that Verdun or Smyrna do. Only more so.

Thanks for attending upon the funeral, Michael. I too have seen these images out of East Aleppo against a historical backdrop composed of approximately comparable images from the XX century of war-wrought ruin and desolation. We recall those images because there is/was history. However, things change. For most people history no longer exists in any way except as an invisible undertow they'd prefer not to acknowledge, for fear of being swept away.

The elation, and trepidation, of the Syrian revolution, never quite made it to these shores anyhow. Occluding any such recognition, the unspoken but inescapable final truth that in the next world war, which has of course been going on for a while now, "we" are meant to be on the one side, "they" on the other, like it or not. There's not a great deal of interest, really, in parsing out who the "they" are. Nor, to be honest, in doing the same with the "we".

I should probably add, by the way, Michael, that Ahmad Alkhatib's family home in the Al Ansari neighborhood, and his barber salon, damaged more than once over the past five years by shelling and bombing, were finally demolished in a night of heavy raids earlier this week. I didn't have the heart to post his images of the wreckage. Extremely affecting. The comfortable conception of a convenient surrender and civilised removal to West Aleppo -- that famous "safe passage option" that's forever being mumbled about (always "in passing", naturally) by the politicians -- comes to seem not only ridiculous but insulting, when one pauses to consider that for someone like this man, the prospect of attempting to pass through a regime checkpoint would be equivalent to the prospect of a humiliating "disappearance"... without Paradise.
