Charlottesville VA 8/12/17 | by Susan Melkisethian

Charlottesville VA, August 12, 2017. A tense atmosphere in Charlottesville as the Unite the Right came armed and ready to fight. We were with the march that was rammed by a car, killing and injuring protesters. We were far enough back that we didn't see it. Just heard sounds and rushed in confusion with the others off the street. We heard calls for Medics and figured out what had happened. On the way out of town we saw a car with front end damage pulled over by the Police and a man in handcuffs, it took a second but then we realized that must have been the killer.: photo by Susan Melkisethian, 12 August 2017

Trump blames 'many sides' for Charlottesville mayhem: photo by AP, 12 August 2017

Trump blames ‘many sides’ for violent clashes in Virginia: AP, 12 August 2017
BEDMINSTER, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump on Saturday blamed “many sides” for the violent clashes between protesters and white supremacists in Virginia and contended that the “hatred and bigotry” broadcast across the country had taken root long before his political ascendancy.

That was not how the Charlottesville mayor assessed the chaos that led the governor to declare a state of emergency, contending that Trump’s campaign fed the flames of prejudice.

Trump, on a working vacation at his New Jersey golf club, had intended to speak briefly at a ceremony marking the signing of bipartisan legislation to aid veterans, but he quickly found that those plans were overtaken by the escalating violence in the Virginia college town. One person died and at least 26 others were sent to the hospital after a car plowed into a group of peaceful anti-racist counterprotesters amid days of race-fueled marches and violent clashes.

Speaking slowly from a podium set up in the golf clubhouse, Trump said that he had just spoken to Gov. Terry McAuliffe, D-Va. “We agreed that the hate and the division must stop, and must stop right now. We have to come together as Americans with love for our nation and ... true affection for each other,” he said.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides,” said Trump. “It’s been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump. Not Barack Obama. It’s been going on for a long, long time.”

The president said that “what is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives.”

After completing his statement and the bill signing, Trump then walked out of the room. He ignored reporters’ shouted questions, including whether he wanted the support of white nationalists who have said they backed him or if the car crash in Virginia were deemed intentional, would it be declared to be terrorism.

The previous two days, Trump took more than 50 questions from a small group of reporters. A White House spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for an explanation as to what Trump mean by “many sides.”

White nationalists had assembled in Charlottesville to vent their frustration against the city’s plans to take down a statue of Confederal Gen. Robert E. Lee. Counter-protesters massed in opposition. A few hours after violent encounters between the two groups, a car drove into a crowd of people peacefully protesting the rally. The driver was later taken into custody.

Mayor Michael Signer said he was disgusted that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed Trump for inflaming racial prejudices with his campaign last year.

“I’m not going to make any bones about it. I place the blame for a lot of what you’re seeing in American today right at the doorstep of the White House and the people around the president,” he said.

Disturbances began Friday night during a torch-lit march through the University of Virginia before escalating Saturday.

The White House was silent for hours except for a tweet from first lady Melania Trump: “Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let’s communicate w/o hate in our hearts.”

Trump later tweeted: “We ALL must be united and condemn all that hate stands for.” He also said “there is no place for this kind of violence in America. Lets come together as one!”

Trump, as a candidate, frequently came under scrutiny for being slow to offer his condemnation of white supremacists. His strongest denunciation of the movement has not come voluntarily, only when asked, and he occasionally trafficked in retweets of racist social media posts during his campaign. His chief strategist, Steve Bannon, once declared that his former news site, Breitbart, was “the platform for the alt-right.”

Other Republicans were far more explicit in their denunciation of white supremacists.

Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner tweeted “Mr. President - we must call evil by its name. These were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism.”

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio wrote “Nothing patriotic about #Nazis, the #KKK or #WhiteSupremacists It’s the direct opposite of what #America seeks to be.”

And former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, father of Trump’s press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, posted “‘White supremacy’ crap is worst kind of racism-it’s EVIL and perversion of God’s truth to ever think our Creator values some above others.”

The president’s reluctance to condemn white bigots also stood in stark contrast by his insistence of calling out “radical Islamic terrorism” by name.

“Now, to solve a problem, you have to be able to state what the problem is or at least say the name,” Trump said in a general election debate.

In his remarks Saturday, Trump mentioned the strong economy and “the many incredible things in our country, so when I watch Charlottesville, to me it’s very, very sad.”

Donald Trump violence on "many sides." Not just him and the fascists like Bannon, Gorka and Miller surrounding him, but also Republicans, many of whom rightly named the Nazis and white supremacists but also continue to project racist policies such as voter suppression. Nazi salutes mark a turning point - but it's up to many people pushing back to make the giant ship actually turn.

Sorry to have shed a few on the cutting room floor... pix that is not tears (all out of those)... e.g. whole section showing the Blood-And-Soil low-end-knock-off Deep-in-the Black Forest If Only Bohemian Club ritual chanting under the Jefferson statue by the eerie glow of the Tiki Torches... in the end even the spookiest brain-shrunken-in-a-jar pseudonazi moo-chanting is not really photogenic... these scenes of disorganised mayhem are of course chaotic by nature, but the mimetic representation of chaos, to be accurate, must also be confusing, if not also confused... Oh well seen one violent Murican Fascist Youth Rally, seen 'em all. We've had a couple of these in our little town. Nothing like the consoling effect of the gentle music of chopper blades beating up on the night (what else is the night for?), or the soothing backlighting that hits the scared wall when the high intensity searchlight beams mix weirdly with the basic Murican umbrage, to concentrate the mind, as Doctor Johnson said (well, he was talking about the natural apprehensiveness that besets one who is about to be hung in the morning, but still, just saying, y'know?). It's not easy to discriminate (count) when you're a thousand-year-old crippled-freeway-feeder-car-crash-victim humanoid with failing eyesight who's been up all night squinting through magnifying glasses at smartphone photos of beefy Murican Youth Fascists with tender fuzzy little one-day-wonder boy-beards in squeaky clean chinos and white polos, official uni of the Murican Vanguard Death Avengers, or whatever this particular strain call themselves (to our untrained view, all Murican Youth Fascists look alike, just like all the waiters in the American restaurant where Charlie Chan used to like to chill, understandably looked to Charlie)... but, however dazed and agape, one gradually inkles that, at about twenty-one-or-so pix from the bottom, in a lineup of standard-issue super rugged preppy babyfat carrying (open carrying) semi-automatic hipster murican white warrior boy heroes, fresh from their crisp white smells-almost-like-new rentavans, here seen composing themselves into some sort of lackadaisical attack formation (L'il Kim with his Generals at the launch-view site does way better threat pix BTW), the charmer who drove the car over the woman doth actually appear. In the actual adipose, as it were -- round black game-of-thrones beowulf-period cut-price terror shield, tan chinos white polo, "normal"-looking (!!the horror in saying that!!) routine-lumpy-puffy, totally white (i.e. melanin-free of course duh) with small testosterone-suggestive beard (just started to shave 7 1/2 minutes ago, but the rentavan was late, or early...), nothing better to do on a hot Murican Friday night (what's that you say? Date? Ha! Bowling? Gutter ball waiting to happen!) Not to single anyone out unduly, like. Name of Fields, they say. As in Fields of Shame, Fields of Death, the Murican version of Elysian Fields.

But why put a fine point on it. In Spanglia don't they get to have the Running of the Bulls, or is it Drooling? So why not the Running of the Peaceful Protestors??!! An idea whose time is about to come. Hail Saint Dylann Roof. Something is happening here and you don't know what it is, do you, Walton Family?? Or maybe you do. After all every car on our Great Murican Streets and Roads is potentially a lethal weapon, every Murican is potentially a killer, hastening into the arms of Death to be born in time for the Drumpfpocalypse. They buy those wonderfully lethal cars and guns at the Walmart Leaf Blower Outlet Store, I've been told. And they're terrific, people. We've got the best cars and leaf blowers and guns, the biggest guns... and generals, have I mentioned that? I've got the best generals! They're just tremendous, people, tremendous. And by the way have I told you yet today about all the Great Jobs I'm creating in about five minutes in the Defense, Police, Security, Military, Insurance, Mortuary and Private Prison industries? No? Everyone you've ever most feared in your very worst dead of night bad moments, lined up first thing in the morning in the New Improved Oval Office, right under the terrific new LED klieg-chandeliers (my idea by the way), in front of the very shiny new gilded-plastic bust of [___](fill in the name of your favourite Disney character). So... what was it I was saying... Oh right, Golf. War. Jobs.

To put this another way... and then there's Beast Mode.

Or, again, when even last week's installment of cancer surgery, or the thought of what comes next, is not half so bad as knowing where you live, where you come from, and what you've done with your life (there were once actually choices... or were there...), maybe it's time to check out the website of the Murican Youth Fascism Death Avengers, and see if they have extension programs for the superannuated.

Yo Hilton, after a couple of hours of restive rest, I was alert enough to actually see your comment. By "many sides', of course, he meant, uh, wink wink, you know. It's the usual game, fill in meanings where the Empty Mirror has left us only reflections, guesses, fears, but no real clues. One can't successfully attribute meanings where there are simply never going to be any. As for pushing back, I see today that the genius who dreamed up this infernal conference of fools in VA actually showed up again on the scene, held some sort of event, was booed off, tried to run away, but was tackled right there in the whatever bushes, by, in fact, a girl, yet.

One woman on Twitter suggested he was a pussy, and warned Trump might grab him, soon.
