Thomas Hardy: Thoughts from Sophocles
        (Oed. Col. 1200 1250)

Who would here sojourn for an outstretched spell
Has senseless promptings, to the thinking gaze,
Since pain comes nigh and nigher with lengthening days,
And nothing shows that joy will ever upwell.

Death is the remedy that cures at call
The doubtful jousts of black and white assays.
What are song, laughter, what the footed maze,
Beside the good of knowing no birth at all?

Gaunt age is as some blank upstanding beak
Chafed by the billows of a northern shore
And facing friendless cold calamity
That strikes upon its features worn and weak
Where sunshine bird and bloom frequent no more,
And cowls of cloud wrap the stars' radiancy.

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928): Thoughts from Sophocles [after Oedipus at Colonus 1211-48], in Evelyn Hardy: Some Unpublished Poems by Thomas Hardy, The London Magazine, 3/1 (January 1956)

If she is elected POTUS, I fully expect Hillary Clinton to settle once and for all the thorny problem of illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine by announcing the U.S. is in favor of the annexation of Palestine by Israel, period; if Trump is elected, I don’t know what will happen and neither does he.

What you're saying makes sense, I'm afraid, Vassilis.

Sandra,

Well, I hate to say this, but from observation, I suspect that what unites people, when young, is joy, or the anticipation of, hope for, even the memory or dream of joy.

And when old, this other thing, the opposite, which often causes the old to fall silent, as befits a site of ruin.

Still one has to bow before the dogged refusal of Thomas Hardy to let sorrow and loss and ruin stop his poetry, or for that matter, to stop it from carrying the burden of human truth, which accumulates, rather than disappearing, over time.

Vassilis, if only your expectation were not a likely statement of the inevitable reality to come!

She's already said -- this in a speech at AIPAC, but then, almost everything she says sounds like a speech at AIPAC -- in that cackling midwestern murican rich-girl-grown-haggard "English" of hers ("ya know... ya know...")... that the first thing she means to do, upon achieving the "highest office", is put in a call to her pal Bibi.

Now we know that Drumpf has said that he will deport two million within his first hour in office. I think those were the numbers.

Her claim is probably going to prove easier to realize, in so many ways.

(Oh by the way, this just in -- I'm put in mind of the national holiday weekend festivities ongoing out there on the freeway -- muricans aren't concerned in the slightest about what happens in the rest of the world, so long as they're guaranteed a permanent high wage for repeating brainless mechanical tasks, plenty of paid leave and sempiternal permission to jump in the car on impulse and race out to pick up something at Safeway.)
