Cotton Gin, Mound Bayou [MS]. I was shooting on the other side of the street when a middle-aged African American man in a dusty pickup stopped and rolled down his window. "Take of picture of that one," he suggested in a friendly tone that somehow carried an undertone that I'd be an idiot and an ingrate to ignore his advice. "My family built that." The gin's shut but the fellow was clearly proud and wanted the white tourist to understand that pride of history. Gins were economic hubs in the first half of the 20th century and the number of black owned gins in Mississippi was no doubt very small. The number was not small in Mound Bayou, though.
