I saw the report on Hungary on Channel 4. Horrible. Europe's peace is certainly something sordid.
A cruel and tentative peace based in fear and paranoid defensiveness is hardly worth the name.
(Not forgetting that Henry Howard Earl of Surrey was a perfect gentleman and knight of Christendom -- nothing like so unmanly and ignoble in his personal habits as th'Assyrian despot Sardanapulus, in his lurid and luxurious curtain scene as romantically imagined by Delacroix...)
