Palladas: Women

Give me a Girle (if one I needs must meet)
Or in her Nuptiall, or her Winding Sheet;
I know but two good Houres that Women have,
One in the Bed, another in the Grave.
Thus of the whole Sex all I would desire
Is to enjoy their Ashes, or their Fire.

Palladas (Alexandrian, 4th c AD): Women, from The Greek Anthology, II.381 (vol. 4), translated by William Cartwright in Comedies, Tragi-Comedies and Other Poems (1651)

i have been a hillary hater, regarding her as devious and deceitful

- but after watching the last night of the convention i finally had an instant karma moment - i recognized her as my sister and realized that i could trust her - trust her to do her best, according her own lights

- while still knowing that i cannot trust her to do what i think would be best, or to tell the truth, or to refrain from what i would consider to be unnecessary mass murder, or in any way to dissent from the consensus of the military-industrial-congressional-financial-corporate media complex -

may the creative forces of the universe have mercy on our souls, if any

mc, thanks very much for that, appreciate the blessing, respect the statement.

Funny thing, I'm pretty sure Drumpf also believes what he's doing is the best he can do according to his own lights; and that he, like Her, has his own lighting system, which creates a kind of cosmetic artificial glow around all things, which you and I will never get to observe in our own comparatively wretched and diminutive little universes.

It's a good thing it's not a binary universe, or we'd be adrift right now in a black sea of aporia, caught between impossibles, not that it's not fun and all, just that my memory of Democratic conventions, going back to the one at which I worked as a security guard, in 1956, never quite lands me in such a phantasmagoric sea of dread and bad fantasy, as did this present one.

The person who put up those #I'mWithHer photos of women fighters is a half black pacific Islander gay poet from LA who seems to have studied with or at least been strongly influenced by Baraka. In a post a couple of nights ago I put up a sequence of his tweets that, when thus sequenced, made a poem.

The past few nights he's been a lone intelligent articulate voice against the present coup d'etat by the DNC gestapo.

Now hear this. Today his entire account is gone.

The next business of Her machine is clearing the field -- mowing the weeds.

I expect surveillance and censorship such as ne'er before seen... like, "going forward", as the machines say.

Chilling creepy and altogether bad news.

Her cackling-witch-in-white speech last night was suffocatingly awful, really very hard to endure, admittedly no worse in its slimy sentimental lying boojie mommy passages than the preceding speech by the junior clinton unit, which explored such deep substance as the time there was an owie but mommy made it okay by reading goodnight moon, and the news that now the latest tiny clinton unit is similarly assuaged by grandmommy on facetime, only a lot longer, and with more bristling hints of menace, and we knew there were wars to come.

Every boojie feminist mommy with two kids in the back of the SUV on the planet naturally considered this same speech eloquent and worthy of at least two or three Nobel prizes, so who am I to say these things.

The girl from BLM holding up the sign at the top of the second half of the post had got into the fundraising event under false pretenses, of course. Pure silent theatrical genius. She showed the sign behind Her back. In the picture you can just see Her noticing out of the corner of Her eye, before Her thugs have a chance to close in on the girl. It is a historical moment in which the culpability of the Clintons in bringing to heel an entire generation of young black men with their drug laws and the beginnings of the massive corporate incarceration machine that has broken the nation apart while grotesquely enriching their foundation, which as I take it is the foundation of the society we now have, such as it is, becomes clear.
