Nâzım Hikmet Ran: Some Advice to Those Who Will Serve Time in Prison

If instead of being hanged by the neck
	you’re thrown inside
	for not giving up hope
in the world, your country, and people,
if you do ten or fifteen years
apart from the time you have left,
you won’t say,
“Better I had swung from the end of a rope
						like a flag” --
you’ll put your foot down and live.
It may not be a pleasure exactly,
but it’s your solemn duty
	to live one more day
			to spite the enemy.
Part of you may live alone inside,
like a stone at the bottom of a well.
But the other part
	must be so caught up
in the flurry of the world
             that you shiver there inside
when outside, at forty days’ distance, a leaf moves.
To wait for letters inside,
to sing sad songs,
or to lie awake all night staring at the ceiling
                              is sweet but dangerous.
Look at your face from shave to shave,
forget your age,
watch out for lice
                       and for spring nights,
       and always remember
to eat every last piece of bread --
also, don’t forget to laugh heartily.
And who knows,
the woman you love may stop loving you.
Don’t say it’s no big thing:
it’s like the snapping of a green branch
                                             to the man inside.
To think of roses and gardens inside is bad,
to think of seas and mountains is good.
Read and write without rest,
and I also advise weaving
and making mirrors.
I mean, it’s not that you can’t pass
        ten or fifteen years inside
                                       and more --
               you can,
               as long as the jewel
on the left side of your chest doesn’t lose its luster!

Hikmet is such a powerful voice. I hope I never need his advice, but it's good to know it's there.

I thought of other poems by Hikmet last night but your choice is perfect Tom, as always...

Steve, Terry, Michael,

Thanks very much.

These are surprising events, and the world changes as they unfold... unless, of course, it doesn't.

Terry, now that you mention it, er... will Hildebeest round us up and have us all immured in a Turkish prison?

After all, it's a growth industry.

Michael, for me, a great world poet is the first and maybe best argument any people or country can offer on its own behalf, in addressing the inhabitants of Earth either individually or en masse.

Darwish for example -- his poems properly translated into Galactic, the best possible advertisement for the always fraught project of intelligent life on Earth, in his little corner pocket of it, and radiating out from there.

I've met more than one Turkish person with whom -- and I don't mean "poets" like, just people -- it was possible to begin a conversation in no more time than it took to say "Hikmet"... a warm smile usually permitting the alien (me) to plunge on in out of my depth... when the rain washes you clean you'll know, and all that.

In a good sense, the poems of a great world poet open a door into a beautiful garden somewhere, and invite us to live there too, despite everything. We don't have American poets like that, of course.

Which of our poets has ever been a "people's poet" in that common sense?

I remember going to Northwestern High School in Detroit in 1967 and proffering upon an audience of some 500 students, all black, a few poems I thought might go over with, like, the people.

Started with Frank O'Hara's poem about picking up little boys at the movies.

Should have stopped right here... or been stopped. (They shoot horses don't they).

Stumbling to find a polite way to say, we just don't have that kind of people's poet...

But Hikmet is like that, and of course there is a great sum of "despite everything" in his case.

Spent perhaps 1/4 of his not very long life in Turkish prisons, a milieu possibly a bit less pleasant than, let's say, the Promenade des Anglais -- and yet, in a certain way, every poem he wrote is a love poem, and the beloved is the country and people.

Go figure.

And now, Erdogan no sweetheart (!), still, and yet, and yet...
