In Country (Willie Peter comes to the party)

We lived our little sort of drama
We kissed in a field of slightly off white
And stars made in Alabama
And packed into little cluster bomblets
Carrying Great American Death Seeds
 By the possessors
Of GOOD AMERICAN JOBS
Fell on that cellphone tree
Disguised as a saguaro cactus
Down by the border
Near where the Transparency wall
Is going up
So don't throw your drugs over it
Just yet
Last night

FACT: In March, a US-led coalition attack killed 105 civilians when targeting just TWO Islamic State snipers #Mosul: image via AmnestyInternational @amnesty, 11 July 2017
1) Replying to @airwars @amnesty Civilian deaths steeply escalating according to monitors, NGOs, intl agencies. Instead of shooting messengers, @CJTFOIR must explain why. Read the full @amnesty report  - which lays out how civilians were trapped between the warring parties at Mosul: tweet via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

2) Number of alleged Coalition events across Iraq, Syria in June (223) exceeds peak tally of Russia allegations (215) during Aleppo Nov 2016: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

3) Coalition munition use sharply escalated in June. Up fourfold at Raqqa (to 4,400); up 21% in W Mosul even as area under attack contracted: image via Airwars @airwars, 12July 2017

4) We presently estimate that a minimum of 529 to 744 civilians likely died in Coalition actions in June – a rise of 52% on May: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

5) Mosul monitoring partly broke down in June as fighting intensified. Based on intl media, NGO fieldwork, casualty estimates may be too low: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

6) Despite Raqqa being far smaller city it's already experiencing levels of bombardment seen in West Mosul assault. High casualties reported: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

7) In Raqqa area alone, 54 children and 34 women were credibly reported killed by Coalition strikes in June. It's becoming a regular pattern: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

8) Our numbers should be seen in context. Many hundreds of civilians were murdered by ISIS in June as they fled Mosul and Raqqa: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

9) High casualties always anticipated from final stages of the war against Islamic State. Even so, every month we now track many more deaths: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

10) We urge @CJTFOIR to look at why civilian deaths from their actions are now consistently running so high - and at how they can come down: image via Airwars @airwars, 12 July 2017

J. H. Almeida: To myself

To myself:
I say America ya ya.
Filthy and strong
grazing buck, a
fig eater.
With what do I sit by
Observe!
Disgust, ya ya
Automated, not yet.

To my partner:
I remember a rage
we once had, all of us.
Not old yet, but still
No wars stopped
No ice cream finish, cold
  and sweet,
but a dog running into
cars makes a breath
be drawn. Traffic halt.
Brilliant!
 we would say

To our friends:
we see you as you see us.
Pigeons fumble in the underground
to get out.
Quite beautiful, a sight
Frantic and calm
  no toes still
our friends.
Remember, with rage
and good. America ya ya.

Young, we tried to pull up
   the roads.
A towel on the beach
with our stone poems.
ya ya, we are still, now
  with age.

Ella and Louis: Stars Fell on Alabama

Unknown said...

This past week your posts are mostly so painful to witness from a summer easy chair. So brutal. The children. The people. The destruction. It's too much. The Abu Mohammed cut line got it right: 'People remain but life does not.' One feels furious and helpless at once. Like that black horse running from the fire one doesn't think much about what's left in the dust. Well, so, your poem J.H. Almeida: To myself' brought to mind a 2014 Jackson Browne tune, 'Yeah Yeah' for some reason. 'America ya ya' I guess. I'm always humbled by how hard you work, Tom. For me, these posts are not to be missed.

"Perpetual war for perpetual peace' - first words that came to mind when I saw the pictureS of the kids on the trolleys. Same old shit that O'bama was at.

Good American Jobs - there's no steadier business than the arms trade.

Thanks very much, Tom and Duncan.

Painful to witness yes, perhaps even worse to make.

They say the rural white trash and the big city elites are not cut from the same cloth, but for me, the "production personnel" of DC and Huntsville simply break down to company-town service workers of different status levels employed in the same national industry, the production of death and harm for profit.

Bodies now being thrown into the river in Mosul, to float anonymously downstream and join the toll, the ever-growing log.

But what was anyway thought to be coming as the long term result of "our" governments' successive strangling of every dissident political element in Western Asia since forever? Chase out, kill, torture, bomb, otherwise eradicate all resistance to "our friends" the entrenched top dog sheikhs and monarchs who hold the black gold we all crave and require for the sustenance of this mad freeway rat race to destroy the planet, a "way of life" that makes all the shining good sense of a tyre fire.

(That trillion ton ice chunk that broke off Antarctica last week certainly got a lot less attention than the ever so fascinating larval wigglings of the drumpfklan.)

The delusion that exterminating every last miserable daeshi, while continuing on with the policies and practises which after the 2003 invasion produced IS in the first place, remains as insane as every other "core tenet" upon which "our" "civilisation" is now however shakily founded.

The fellow who does the site Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently asks the simple question, once Daesh, with its dark ideation, has been finally dispatched for good and all, what glorious shining idea will fill the resulting conceptual void? The idea of doing a deal? Of being able to jump in the SUV and pick up something at safeway or jump on a plane to Paris for a bit of complicit escapist fun?

The suggestion that the guillotine be put back into use on occasions like the drumpfvisit with the macronons seems sound enough, though 'twould be a pity to see a good blade dirtied up like that.

So now we've had the great MAGA Revolution. One fears for the what the next great "popular" Revolution might look like. But meanwhile as we wait and wonder (not), where O where is the ghost of Charlotte Corday?

One imagines her for a moment incarnate in the camouflage jumpsuit of a YPG female fighter, somehow sneaking by night into the shower facility at CENTCOM and... or maybe vaulting over the fence onto the pristine lawns of the Casa Blanca and...

The old can only dream, and vaguely remember things that probably never even happened.
