Anna Wickham: The Fired Pot

In our town, people live in rows.
The only irregular thing in a street is the steeple;
And where that points to, God only knows,
And not the poor disciplined people!

And I have watched the women growing old,
Passionate about pins, and pence, and soap,
Till the heart within my wedded breast grew cold,
And I lost hope.

But a young soldier came to our town,
He spoke his mind most candidly.
He asked me quickly to lie down,
And that was very good for me.

For though I gave him no embrace --
Remembering my duty --
He altered the expression of my face,
And gave me back my beauty.

Anna Wickham (1884-1947): The Fired Pot, from The Man with a  Hammer, 1916

Good to see Jesus finally cracking a smile.

A colleague at work grew up near the lakes of Killarney, her one place of escape through a miserable childhood. She's forever talking about it.

"the poor, disciplined people"

Everything kept in good order, with a steeple for the vertical and the terraceds for the horizontal.

Pleased that you enjoyed, Sandra.

Terry, Jesus of Orlando is plainly in the market for a smile. Or possibly, if he's looking up, truck parts, in such times.

The National Library of Ireland manages wonderfully the dusty labour of taking the Drear out of Archive. The posters and commenters have great fun, in the Irish way, in providing and often postulating whole swatches of local knowledge (and of course interesting speculation) re. the national heritage. One finds out, for example, that the Bushmills works has not changed much, any more than has, for that matter, the Bushmills. (Perhaps not even at the Elkhorn.) Duncan, that particular panorama of the Upper Lake of Killarney has a bit of mystery hid up its sleeve. When it's made quite large, as in the iteration here, a close look reveals some sort of foolery occurring in the foliage tucked away in the lower right corner. Nobody knows quite who is doing what to or with whom, in that bush.
