Tom,

I live in the state that borders Kashmir and still I'm quite sure I get second-hand, fudged accounts to read. Worse, I work in the media myself, and there seems to be this uneasiness to go around when the issue of Kashmir issue comes up. It has such a complicated history which has been tampered an torn apart to the extent that everyone has his or her own truths to go along with. Social media has only made it worse. The people of Kashmir, I'm afraid, have no chance. The State always wins, as someone said. There are plenty of freedoms to be had, but a lot more to be killed, I guess. And the world seems in a hurry to do just that.

There's a large Kashmiri community in Birmingham so the issue has been close at hand. Most people find it impossible to talk about. These forgotten corners must be remembered. I've been thinking a lot about the war in Yemen recently following conversations with a friend at work. We do a tidy trade in arms with both India and the Saudis.

manik and Duncan,

It's been stirring and heartbreaking to follow the news out of Kashmir over the past week since the martyrdom (as it's taken to be) of the boy hero who had arisen to lead, Burhan Wani, seemingly the latest of several symbolic avatar popular leader figures to gain their power by being killed by Indian security forces in their resistance to Occupation. It does appear that while a beatdown with canes and pellets may seem light restraint next to mechanized storm trooper phalanxes as we have here, nonetheless one caught in the path of a pellet blast at close range can be blinded, even killed, and that is happening. I gather internet has been largely cut off. The eloquence of the messages I have seen testifies to the trepidation and the courage, suffering and seriousness and valour of those seeking freedom from India, many of them of course youthful stonethrowers, evidently not stayed by the practical hopelessness of their cause.

As to the confusion, and the practical hopelesness, Manik addresses those things from much closer to hand -- very grateful for that, a sort of bridge over to this.
