The Mower to the Glo-worms

I

Ye Living Lamps, by whose dear light
The Nightingale does sit so late,
And studying all the Summer-night,
Her matchless Songs does meditate;

II

Ye Country Comets, that portend
No War, nor Prince’s funeral,
Shining unto no higher end
Than to presage the Grasses fall;

III

Ye Glo-worms, whose officious Flame
To wandring Mowers shows the way,
That in the Night have lost their aim,

And after foolish Fires do stray;

IV

Your courteous Lights in vain you wast,
Since Juliana here is come,
For She my Mind hath so displac’d
That I shall never find my home.

bouncy houses

Prof Bo Peep said the little temples of whoops
and screams
and sugarfueled hyped into orbit space-x
             kid attitude
                           up and down the block
express
             societal release
   i get flashes
now of scenes of unanticipated enigmatic
                  constrained
semi-societally licensed
                            latitude

played out in lives of ancestors dead long ago
under dusty palms on silent
white tacky little socal streets
all those grim whited out years
behind white windowlace in santa monica
    of praying
going to church w pat o'brien and not praying
having an attitude in the dark confessional pews
having ww ii combat vet motorcycle cop
broken marriage ptsd
        catching
                  rectal cancer
and never stopping
                          privately
                                       wishing
they'd never left chicago

Duncan, It's forever a marvel to me that AM could have writ so beautifully when still such a young man, and so deeply in the lyric mode when all round, outside Fairfax's gardens, red war had been going on, and every battlefield had become a site of apocalyptic signs and omens, and like it or no everyone in England had a stake - though perhaps the fieldworkers had their attention on the chores, as the hired help must always do.

The Von Karajan Brahms, magnificent.

None of the intensity or swelling spiritual enormity of world spirit in our Andy, though both these young men, still in their mid thirties, had produced such brilliant work so early.

Brahms would have been brooding - over the deaths of Clara Schumann and, a decade later, of his mother - we're told.

I've always had him down as the brooding sort.

"Inside, I never laugh."

"Life robs us of more than death does."

Obviously these are two distinct mind-sets, or time-ghosts more like.

Always amazed by the playfulness in Marvell, in despite of the parlous times. I think that has to be the 17th century mind. English falls off a cliff thereafter. Having already left us all that marvelous poetry - Marvell's the high point of it, to my belated understanding.

Well, no, Mr Marvel would have not even been 30 at the time he tossed off this nuanced little gem of cabinet poetry for the ages, which will be appreciated as long as there is English and as long as there are comets thought meaningful and civil wars breaking nations and families and yet fireflies in summer and young men in high summer discombobulated by beauty - though there again, what and whom Mr M might gave found beauteous, then, or ever, remains lockt within the mystery he will always be.

After all, we do know both Clara Schumann and Brahms' mother were actual historical persons, whereas Juliana, not so much... more idea than person.

By the by, while we're doing a minimal bit of background on the AM of the period of the Wars - and do forgive that, it's all down to the beautiful attention of Wooden Boy (thank you again WB!) - ought also to at least mention the great Chilean photographer Marcelo Montecino, intimate chronicler of decades of political repression and resistance; in his own very different epoch MM was equally or in fact far more than equally cognizant of the tragic depths of civil strife, within his family, his homeland, and indeed throughout a hemisphere.

His work from Mexico and that of the contemporary Mexican photographer Fermin Guzman are here with Mr M's for a reason, though that reason may be obscure to everybody but me (wouldn't be the first time tbh).

Now also told that not everybody knows what a bouncy house is.

But anybody who's not yet lost hearing and has loitered within a quarter mile of one will know.

Even the traffic roar can't compete with that level of bedlam.
