I

Living is no laughing matter:
...you must live with great seriousness
......like a squirrel, for example --
I mean without looking for something beyond and above living,
......I mean living must be your whole occupation.

Living is no laughing matter:
 .....you must take it seriously,
.....so much so and to such a degree
that, for example, your hands tied behind your back,
                                            your back to the wall,
 or else in a laboratory
.....in your white coat and safety glasses,
.....you can die for people --
even for people whose faces you’ve never seen,
   even though you know living
.....is the most real, the most beautiful thing.

I mean, you must take living so seriously
that even at seventy, for example, you’ll plant olive trees --
and not for your children, either,
but because although you fear death you don’t believe it,
because living, I mean, weighs heavier.

III

This earth will grow cold,
a star among stars
               and one of the smallest,
a gilded mote on blue velvet --
I mean this, our great earth.
This earth will grow cold one day,
not like a block of ice
or a dead cloud even
but like an empty walnut it will roll along
   in pitch-black space . . .
You must grieve for this right now
-- you have to feel this sorrow now --
for the world must be loved this much
                               if you’re going to say “I lived”. . .

Nazim Hikmet (1902-1963): from Living (February 1948), translated by Randy Blasing and Mutlu Konuk, 1993

Located in the constellation Auriga, IC 417 lies about 10,000 light-years away. It is in the outer part of the Milky Way, almost exactly in the opposite direction from the galactic center. A cluster of young stars called "Stock 8" can be seen (centerR). The light from this cluster carves out a bowl in the nearby dust clouds, seen here as green fluff. Along the sinuous tail in the center and to the left, groupings of red point sources are also young stars. Thanks, Tom. Hikmet is a great poet.

I have always loved hikmet's poetry but it was almost painful to read this poem and then scroll down through the photos you chose to juxtapose with it...the harsh realties, despite....

Thanks very much, gents.

For me Hikmet's poetry always comes as a test of empathy, emanating from some remote location beyond the perspicuous frontiers of the Valley of Niceness let us say... and perhaps somewhat alien to the Murican sensibility in that respect... but of course we're still the new kid on this block (the world, that is).

You must grieve for this right now
-- you have to feel this sorrow now --

Another stunning post and a lovely poem. But, tom, might it not be the case that a cult of " life" (consumption, standards of living) is what has led us here in the first place? The great irony: just as we'd convinced ourselves we were nothing but animals without a " beyond", and that this was our only home we started to hate the world and desire nothing more than to escape from it.

TC said...

That's certainly the truth. Of course Hikmet's idea of life and living and a good life probably hove far closer to something like the grain and texture of a knowable world than would that of the modern high-end consumer -- and also, to the very basic and quite miserable, vulnerable and exposed existence of the displaced persons of the present moment, in their forced diaspora.

It feels sometimes as though history had turned back upon itself toward an earlier state of things, an atavism, a scattering and reaping, awful to behold, yet there is also this curious persistence of an imagery that makes the suffering of The Forgotten impossible to forget, and thus passes for a heartbeat in a time of silence.
